Summary for 4233 Woodlawn AVE / Parcel ID 4083301380 / Inv #

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman, Colonial - Colonial Revival Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1924

Significance
This house was built in 1924 according to the King County Property Record Card (1937) and in 1920 according to the King County Assessor Property Characteristics Report (accessed in 2005). Hilda M. Norman owned the house when the Assessor surveyed the property in 1937 and appears to have purchased the property in 1924. The current owners bought the house from Helen M. Miles in 1988.

Appearance
This is a two story, clapboard clad frame residence built over a full basement on a concrete foundation. The gabled entry portico with vaulted soffit, the side lit entry door and the returning closed soffit detailing of the eaves and overhangs suggest colonial revival work; however, the placement of the entry porch and the massing of the structure is more typical of craftsman bungalow design. The addition of a front-facing gable to this essentially side-gabled structure and the arched top gable vent centered in the front gable are suggestive of the Tudor revival style that came into vogue in the late 1920s, although the pitch of Tudor revival roofs were typically much steeper than the roof of this particular structure. The siding may have been replaced in kind. Several of the original, bungalow style, main floor windows were replaced with large “picture” windows between 1937 and 1962. They were replaced again with sash somewhat more sympathetic to the original design in the course of a more recent renovation. The built-up wood posts supporting the entry portico roof replacer the original piers that were displaced for a time by a pair of wrought iron supports.
