Summary for 1907 7th AVE / Parcel ID 0659000625 / Inv #

Historic Name: "Parking Lot for Vance Lumber Company," Hotel Vance parking garage Common Name: Hotel Max parking garage
Style: Modern, Other - Utilitarian Neighborhood: Denny Triangle
Built By: Year Built: 1948

Significance
This was built as a garage for the Vance Hotel, now the Hotel Max and completed in 1948. It continues to serve as a garage for the Hotel Max. It replaced a one story brick building from 1890, which had segmental arches and corbelling at the parapet and was demolished in 1939. This newer infill building is simple, utilitarian, and mainly interesting because of its original, industrial sash windows. The cladding appears to have been resurfaced. Changes have been made to the façade, because of functional necessity and perhaps to improve its original rough appearance. Although some original elements remain, the integrity of the building façade has been compromised.

Appearance
This is a three story concrete garage building, located adjacent to the former Vance Hotel, now the Hotel Max. It has a rectangular footprint, 60’ x 120’. It mainly has a flat roof and parapet, although, early photos show a monitor roof, set back from the façade parapet. The monitor is mostly not visible from the street. The only façade, which has concrete cladding, is set along 7th Avenue. It has a tripartite division. The central bay is about twice the width of the side bays. There are trabeated openings, with two wide garage openings at two of the bays at the ground level. Corresponding rectangular openings, at the second and third levels, are filled with industrial sash glazing. Judging from a photo from 1936, it looks as though the original cladding, although also concrete, was much rougher. It is likely that the façade, which now includes very regular control joints, has been resurfaced recently. Also, the southern bay at the ground level appears to have been altered to include two recessed doorways, which flank a narrower trabeated opening. At the second level, part of the window opening has been filled with a large vent.
