Significance |
|
This is an excellent example of a small commercial building, found in many Seattle neighborhoods. It is one of the last remaining virtually intact examples of its size in the downtown area. Combined with the similar building to the east, the Rodeo Café building on Denny Way, the landmark Chief Seattle statue and Tillicum Place, it forms a notable composition reflecting the history of Denny Way and the residential character of this part of the Denny Regrade.
This building was built in 1927, with subtle Art Deco detailing. It has always had a variety of food-related and service businesses. In 1938 the corner tenant was Ruby McSweeney’s grocery and the Stutz Mutual meat market, along with the Cedar Café, Cedar Barbershop and the Cedar Street Bakery. Most of these remained for some time, changing names from time to time. Following a recent renovation it still has a variety of restaurants and service businesses.

Appearance |
This one-story frame building is clad with scored brick in shades of tan and brown, with black ceramic tile bulkheads featuring a row of gold accent tiles. Ornamentation has a slight Art Deco flavor. Pilasters between the storefronts have cast stone capitols with geometric panels above. The storefronts have original multilight transoms above the display windows. The recessed entries have wood doors and blue and white hexagonal tile floors. One of the five storefronts has been altered, with newer windows and doors and a Roman brick bulkhead; the transom is intact. |
