Historic Name: Substation Common Name:
Style: Art Deco - Streamline Moderne Neighborhood: University
Built By: Year Built: 1952

Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local).

Based on field work conducted in October 2014, this historic property has been altered to such a degree that it no longer retains its relationship to the streetscape and/or its historic building form. Furthermore, it does not retain a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of University Park neighborhood.

This building is unique in the University District as a former transformer vault that has been converted into a residence and architect's studio. It reflects some Moderne influences in its simplicity and materials. The second floor was added in 1952-1954 to convert the building into a residence by owner Harold E. Renfro. The transformer vault portion was used as a basement, and this level has been converted to a studio. Renfro continued to live in the building until 1978. David Stone lived in the building from 1978-1988.

Appearance
This simple square building still reflects its substation origins, with concrete and some bricks in a turned square pattern. Most of the windows are wood casement windows. The garage has been converted to an architect's office/studio, and the basement doors have been changed. The wrought iron deck on the east elevation is also not original.
