Historic Name: Forestenson-Rosby House Common Name: Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Columbia City Built By: Year Built: 1892   Significance This house was built in 1892 on block 6, lot 160 of the plat of Columbia. The plat of Columbia was filed on August 5th, 1891 at the request of J.K. Edmiston a representative of the Washington Co-operative Home Company. Approximately 32 houses were built in the plat of Columbia between 1891 and 1892. By 1938, only 21 houses built between 1891 and 1892 were still extant in the Columbia plat. This house is one of five houses built between 1891 and 1892 in the plat of Columbia that are extant in the Columbia City historic district. Initial ownership of the house is unknown and 1895 King County Assessor’s records show that the property was forfeited to the County. The house was purchased shortly thereafter by T.E. Forestenson. The Rainier Valley State Bank sold the property to A.L. Rosby in 1926. The house was occupied by a number of tenants during the 1930s and 1940s, including Maude J. Proctor, Jason E. Judd, Joseph S. Taylor, and John O. Berg. Earl L. Sumner purchased the house from Rosby sometime prior to the mid-1960s. This house is significant as one of the few remaining early residential buildings constructed in the Columbia City neighborhood.   Appearance This one and a half story vernacular house is of wood frame construction and is supported by a concrete foundation. The house has a rectangular plan and a hip roof form with a front cross gable. The front entrance, formerly a cutaway porch, has been enclosed, and the entrance is covered with a small shed roof. A shed roof dormer has been added to the west side elevation. The house is clad in horizontal aluminum/vinyl siding. The fenestration consists of modern aluminum windows. A large picture window is located next to the entrance on the front elevation. A single large window is located on the half story of the front gable end. Four fixed pane windows are located on the shed dormer.
