This small house is distinctive for its combination of Spanish Revival and Colonial Revival elements, and for its brick construction, unusual in the 1920s. The first known owners were Colin and Florence Hastie. Mr. Hastie and his father founded Sound Construction & Engineering, a prominent firm that built the Washington state Capitol and other major buildings. The Hasties had lived in Olympia and moved into this house about the time that Capitol construction was completed, in 1926-27. Mrs. Hastie remained here until the 1940s when it was purchased by Alfred and Elizabeth Young. Later owners include Harold A. Johnson (1960s) and Harold and Marsha Rathman (1970s).

Appearance
This house has a hipped roof of red clay tile; cladding is stucco with red brick trim, including brick sills, arches over the large windows, quoins and a water table. According to the 1930 King County Tax Assessor records, the house is of solid brick construction. The entry is in the center of the main (south) façade. There is no porch, but a stoop with an arched oak door sheltered by a large round Colonial style hood supported by massive curved brackets. The entry is flanked by two small arched leaded glass windows, with a third window west of the prominent stucco-clad chimney that pierces the eave line. The upper portion of the chimney is clad with red brick, with ornamental brick arches at the bottom reflecting the arched hood over the door. The east end of the main façade has a three-part window, with a one-over-one window flanked by two narrow fixed panes. The other end has a similar but smaller window. Windows on other elevations are one-over-one double hung sash. Above the entry is an arched dormer with a two-part leaded arched window. The west elevation has a second-floor balcony with a flat roof and large brackets. The east elevation has a leaded glass door set into the roof and two three-part windows with eight-light side sections and arches in between. A garage is located beneath the southwest end.
