Based on field work conducted in October 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the University Park neighborhood. This is a particularly well-preserved historic property that appears to possess architectural and/or historic significance.
(2002) This relatively simple American Foursquare and Craftsman style house relates to the house next door at 5256 16th Avenue E, the house two doors north at 5260 16th Avenue NE, and the Shuey house at 5218 16th Avenue NE. All of these houses were built in 1908-1909.
The original owner and builder are unknown, but the houses are likely to have been developed as a group by H.O. Shuey in 1908. Later owners included Benjamin J. Smith from 1933 until about 1948, Mrs. Virginia McNeal in 1948, and James McEachern in 1949. Other residents have included Kathleen Buchanan in the 1950s and Dorothy Van Winkle in the 1970s
The garage on the alley was built in 1923.

This property exhibits no substantive changes to the exterior appearance since it was identified in the 2002 HRI project.
(2002) This house has elements of the American Foursquare style and the Craftsman style. The form is similar to an American Foursquare, except it does not have the typical hipped roof. The house has a prominent bay window above the porch on the west (main) elevation and a Palladian window at the attic level on the gable end of the west elevation. It has simple double-hung single sash wood windows. There is a second bay window on the south elevation. The house has the same dentils on the cornice between the first and second floors found on the H.O. Shuey house at 5218 16th Avenue NE, and similar decorative brackets below the eaves. There are decorative scalloped shingles on the third floor level of the gable end on the west elevation.
The enclosed porch on the southeast corner of the east elevation may be a later change. The house has wide overhanging eaves and has decorative brackets below the eaves. A few windows may have been replaced. There is an external chimney on the south elevation. |
