Summary for 8204 NE Roosevelt WAY NE / Parcel ID 5100400230 / Inv # SPU014

Historic Name: Roosevelt Pump Station Common Name:
Style: Modern Neighborhood: Roosevelt
Built By: Year Built: 1953

Significance
The Seattle Water Department constructed this pump station in 1953 at the southwest corner of the Maple Leaf Reservoir/Maple Leaf Playfield site. Forty years earlier, the Water Department constructed the intermediate service reservoir at the then northern limits of the city at 85th Street. By the early 1950s, the City’s population center had shifted to the north, especially after extensive annexations north to 145th Street between 1950 and 1954. The Water Department already provided direct service to more than half of the retail customers in the newly annexed area. However, a new north end pumping facility was necessary in order to serve the hilltop areas of northeast Seattle with water from the existing reservoirs and the new 1,000,000-gallon Maple Leaf Tank completed four years earlier in 1949. Though modest in design, the Roosevelt Pump Station is significant for its association with the growth and development of the Seattle water system.

Appearance
Located on a slight rise at the southwest corner of the Maple Leaf Playfield, this simple Modern building features a gable roof with no overhang on the east elevation, and a slight overhang on the north, south and west elevations. The S-shaped footprint of the building creates recessed areas at the northwest and southeast corners. The only entrances to the building are located within the northwest recessed area. Double metal doors are located on the longer west wall of this area while a single door occupies the south wall. A band of metal pivot windows covered by a metal grate is situated above this entrance door. Additional windows line the north and west walls of southeast recessed corner below the roofline. The building is primarily clad with textured concrete or stucco incised into large panels and divided by concrete piers. Roman brick covers the outer wall of the south elevation while a rough face stone clads the outer wall of the west elevation. A small "SEATTLE WATER DEPARTMENT" sign installed on this west wall is made of wood with metal letters. Large cedar shingles cover the gable ends. This modest buildings remains intact and displays good physical integrity.
