|
The Blakely Psychiatric Building was designed by Seattle architect Paul Kirk in 1956. This building is distinctive of Kirk’s post-war style; Kirk is known for his use of post and beam modular pavilions of glass and wood, often using basalt rock screen walls.
Paul Hayden Kirk was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1914 and arrived in Seattle in 1922. Kirk received his architectural degree from the University of Washington in 1937. Early in his career Kirk worked for architects A. Naramore, Henry Bittman and A.M. Young. Kirk's architecture embodied the Northwest Style, which can be seen in many of his buildings, including the Blair Kirk House, the University Unitarian Church and the Magnolia Branch Public Library.

Appearance |
The Blakely Psychiatric Building is a single story post-War style structure. The use of post and beam modular pavilions of glass and wood with basalt rock screen walls is a Northwest derivative of the International Style. The use of natural materials including rock and wood is typical of the Northwest Style. The post and beams have been replaced and Plexiglas has been substituted for glass. The floor plan includes an Asian influenced garden enclosure. |
