Historic Name: Cash Register Exchange Common Name: Shorty's

Built By: Year Built: 1923

Significance
This two-story brick building was built in 1923. Judging from the large industrial sash windows that were then on the second story, it was intended for a combination of retail and light industrial uses. In 1937 it housed the Cash Register Exchange, Brown Sheet Metal Works, the North Bend Stage Line and the Niels Hansen Manufacturing Company, which made store fixtures. These were all typical of the uses that could take advantage of Belltown’s lower rents with proximity to downtown customers. It later became a warehouse, then office space. In 1951 it was significantly modernized with new windows on the first floor; it appears that these were later replaced. At that time, the upper loft was used by Sportcaster, probably for clothing manufacturing, a common use in downtown Seattle. It has since been altered further with newer windows on the second floor and marblecrete or heavy stucco cladding on the first story.
