This two-story brick building was built in 1914 as Sam Inch’s Gotham Garage, offering both repairs and vehicle storage. It was designed by J. L. McCauley, and was distinguished by large double garage doors in the center, 12-light transoms above the display windows, and 6-over-1 windows on the second story. Seattle’s first automobile only arrived in 1905, so this would have been one of the earliest and larger garages in Belltown. This newly regraded area had less costly land yet was conveniently located for those working downtown to have cars serviced. It also provided parking, since apartments and office buildings did not yet provide parking. The garage appears to have remained until 1947, when the large center doors were replaced by display windows for Bergman Luggage.

Appearance |
This building has been extensively altered with new windows on the first floor. The second story two-over-two wood sash appear older, but are not original. The arched parapet, prominent cornice and brick facing, with decorative brickwork between floors, remain. |
