Significance

This property was constructed in 1926, according to the King County Assessor, in the Uptown neighborhood as a multi-family apartment building.

 
Appearance

Constructed in 1926, this 3-story apartment building is located on the southeast corner of W Mercer Street and Third Avenue W. The building is oriented with its main entrance facing north to W Mercer Street. The building at 221 W Mercer Street has a flat roof with parapet. The poured concrete building has a daylight basement; the site slopes down from north to south. The building stands on a poured concrete foundation and a rectangular plan. The apartment building is clad in brick veneer with terra cotta accents. The cornice band and door surround consist of terra cotta. The windows have brick soldier course headers with terra cotta keystones; brick soldier courses form the sills. The main entrance is framed by a terra cotta surround with stucco in the transom area above the door. The front door is wood with wood single light sidelights. The windows are predominately wood fixed picture windows with some 1:1 sash and horizontal sliders. The building’s name “Betty-May” is present above the entrance.

The building retains moderate and is an average example of a brick-clad apartment building.
