Summary for 3000 1st AVE / Parcel ID 0695000200 / Inv #

Historic Name: Friedman Lodge & Block Common Name: Maxwell Chiropractic
Style: Modern - International Style Neighborhood: Belltown
Built By: Year Built: 1959

Significance
This modest building was originally known as the Friedman Lodge and Block, with a variety of offices. It was built in 1959, during a period of considerable change in this vicinity. The north edge of Belltown and the adjacent Lower Queen Anne neighborhood were underdeveloped compared to nearby denser areas, and when the post-war economy recovered sufficiently these areas proved to be fertile ground for construction of small commercial buildings. The 1962 World’s Fair, located only blocks away, also spurred development. This building is also a good example of the minimalist International Style, the primary design vocabulary of the 1950s. During this decade, International Style buildings of all sizes became common in Seattle for virtually all commercial and institutional purposes. Because modular construction was economical, the style was often used for government buildings, schools and hospitals as well as high-rises and small office structures like this one.

Appearance
Small commercial buildings in this style are often characterized, as is this one, by expanses of glass, stucco and marblecrete, with aluminum window frames. In this building the second story cantilevers over the first story on the west and south sides. Another modern touch is that the main entrance is on the east, away from the street, opening onto a small parking lot.
