This historic property was identified in the 1997 HRI; however, based on field work conducted in September 2014 it has been demolished and is no longer extant.
This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The original owner or builder of this residence have not been identified. It is known to have been owned by Maggie Daugherty prior to c. 1942. This house is similar in character, form, and building fabric to several other nearby residences. This property may pre-date the construction date identified on assessor’s records and is worthy of additional research to determine a more accurate date of construction and original ownership. | Appearance |
| A generally intact however altered example of the gable-front vernacular house type. This was a common domestic plan type that was popularly constructed throughout the American West during the later half of the 19th C and the early decades of the 20th C. The gable-front facade exhibits distinctive design features and historic building fabric indicative of popular architecture during the late 19th C: a prominent one story building form accentuated by a medium pitch roof, full width front porch and original tall, narrow double-hung windows with heavy surrounds. This cottage is approx. 700 sq. ft. and is currently clad with the original rustic siding (with corner boards, gable and eave trim). The form of the cottage is similar to several other small front gable houses in the immediate vicinity. The footprint of the main gable portion of the house is approx. 24’ x30’ and includes a recessed rear porch. Exterior alterations of note include the entire removal of original front porch spindle work. A portion of the central brick chimney remains in place. |
