Historic Name: Unknown Common Name: Pine Food Market
Style: Spanish - Mission Neighborhood: Pike/Pine
Built By: Year Built: 1927

Significance

This one-story masonry building is currently occupied by the Pine Food Market.  It was built in 1927, apparently as a retail store rather than as one of the auto repair shops that are ubiquitous in the area.  In 1938 its main tenant was a doughnut shop.  The building is a relatively ornate example of its type, but has been altered.  It stands out for its stucco exterior, prominent coping and extravagant curvilinear parapet, originally described as “very fancy.” The parapet originally had three tall finials, which were probably damaged in an earthquake or removed for safety reasons. Additional ornament on the parapet and around the windows has also been removed, and an arched doorway at the southwest corner (facing Boylston Avenue) has been filled in.
