Historic Name: Naoma Apartments Common Name: Naoma Apartments Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Capitol Hill Built By: Year Built: 1904   Significance This is one of the area's earliest apartment buildings, and its clapboard siding and three-sided hanging bay reflect its early date. The architect listed on the building permit is Charles E. Bliss of the contracting firm of Brown, Bliss, Wilkin, with offices in the Walker Building in downtown Seattle. The original owners were Porter D. Ehle and his son Bert, both of whom lived in the building with their wives. It is not clear how many units it had originally. This building is one of the earliest examples of the numerous apartment buildings that began appearing on Capitol Hill and First Hill in the first two decades of the 20th century. This was one of theIn the 1880s-90s, the area, with views and proximity to downtown, had developed as the premiere residential neighborhood, with the city's finest mansions. However, by 1920, apartments and institutions such as hospitals and schools appeared throughout.   Appearance This three-story clapboard building is a narrow rectangular in plan (25 feet wide and 95 feet deep) with the general appearance of a single row house. The small recessed porch at the southeast corner is flanked by square wood columns and has an oak and glass door with sidelights. The second story projects over the first, with four three-sided hanging window bays; a wide wood belt course separates the stories. The second and third stories are separated by a wide shingle-clad band that projects over the second story. Above are deep eaves, with metal cladding on the parapet above. Windows have newer vinyl sash with an 8-over-1 configuration.
