This large Tudor-inspired house was designed by William Bain Sr. for William D. Calvert, Jr. in 1936. It is one of a community of houses from that period that were built on steep Boston Terrace, a location with spectacular views toward the north and east. The house was purchased by Robert J. Block in 1949, and he lived here until his death in 1995. There is a large but compatible two-story addition that extends the house to the south and moving the garage over. Block, president of National Securities Company, was active in civic affairs, including the founding of Allied Arts and the Allied Arts Foundation and the city effort to upgrade the Civic Auditorium (later the Opera House, which laid the financial foundation for the Seattle World's Fair six years later.

| Appearance |
| This house is shaped to fit the edge of the hill, with a rounded terrace on the northeast. The house is built around a courtyard, with the recessed at-grade entry at the north side; it is sheltered by a shed roof with rustic wood posts. Cladding is brick on the lower levels with half-timbered stucco on the gables and clapboard on the gable ends. Windows are primarily steel casements, with large expanses of multipaned sash on the first floor and pairs of casements in the gable ends. |
