Historic Name: The Brick Store Common Name: Jules Maes Saloon & Eatery
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Georgetown
Built By: Year Built: 1897

Significance

Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct historic character of the Georgetown neighborhood. This is an slightly altered but relatively well-preserved historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance.

(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The original owner/builder of this building has not been identified. Known as the Brick Store (a hardware store), it was acquired by Margaret Fox Herrman in late 1936 and then occupied by Jules Maes, Inc. (a restaurant, beer parlor and meeting hall). Prior to its relocation to this building, the business had been located nearby at 5953 Duwamish (Airport Way South), the old Rainier Bar site, since the end of prohibition. It has continued in this use to this day.

Appearance
This property retains an intact historic building form, most of its historic building fabric and architectural features.
The only substantive change to the exterior of this building since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project is the renovation of the previously altered storefront; as entirely new storefront has been installed. It is not know if any original historic building fabric/fenestration patterns were referenced or used in the new design.

(1997) A generally intact example of late 19th C. commercial architecture that has been inappropriately altered and remodeled. Exhibits distinctive two-part commercial block facade composition with tall narrow segmental arched window openings at the upper floor level and a radically altered storefront level. The commercial storefront is offset with a recessed entryway to the upper floor level situated to the north side of the facade, a central recessed storefront entryway, altered storefront display and transom windows, and an intrusive rough cut stone masonry veneer bulkhead. The facade is capped by a corbelled brick cornice and further distinguished by dentil patterns above the windows and at the intermediate cornice. Windows are typically double-hung (1/1) type and have been altered by the addition of shutters. The brick cladding has been seriously altered and possibly damaged by the application of paint. A heavily altered one story wood frame addition is situated at the west end of the masonry structure. The lower floor level is used as a tavern, restaurant and meeting room. The upper floor level includes three apartment units and was historically divided into hotel/boarding rooms. A one-story masonry structure (the old OK Barber Shop constructed c.1924) is situated immediately adjacent to the north elevation and appears to be part of the property.
