Significance |
|
Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct historic character of the Georgetown neighborhood. This is an altered but relatively intact historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance.
(1997) Based on the research done thus far, this property is believed to be associated with an era of residential and commercial building between 1916 and 1942 which continued in Georgetown despite an acceleration of the trends toward the industrialization of the area. Significant changes came with prohibition and the closure of the brewery in 1916, the completion of the Duwamish Waterway in 1917, and the arrival of new businesses, such as the Boeing Airplane Company in 1916. In spite of the increasingly industrial nature of the area which had been zoned as such in 1923, residents of Georgetown continued to build new homes and businesses and to plan for a future in the neighborhood. Due to the unusual brick masonry units and form of this building in conjunction with its location adjacent to the railroad right-of-way, there is some question as to whether the building was entirely constructed or adapted and expanded in 1922 for commercial use. It is known that Peter Scalzo, a barber, acquired the property in 1922 and established a barber shop with a residence located above. Additional research is required to determine if the property is associated with rail transportation.

Appearance |
No substantial change to building form or condition of historic building features/fabric as described below.
(1997) An unusual example of early 20th C. commercial architecture that may have served a prior non-commercial (possibly railroad related) use and was possibly altered and remodeled in 1922 to the current form (A. Shigley was the contractor). This small two-story triangular/gridiron building form measures approx. 18’ x 29’ x 31’ and is situated adjacent to a street intersection and an abandoned railroad right-of-way. It exhibits distinctive two-part commercial block facade composition with the upper floor level wood-frame construction and the storefront level a highly unusual scored brick masonry material. The storefront level is only partly intact, and the upper level has been extensively altered by the introduction of wide cedar siding and modern aluminum window units. The small commercial storefront (c.1922) includes display windows and a glazed panel door. An additional storefront entry and windows have been covered by beveled siding materials. The upper floor level windows were originally standard double-hung (1/1) type and included wood trim surrounds. The upper floor was originally clad with narrow clapboard with included corner boards. The extant brick is a highly unusual heavily scored/rusticated material and no other example was observed in Georgetown or identified elsewhere in Seattle. The lower floor level was historically used as a barber shop (after 1922) while the upper floor level served as living quarters. |
