Historic Name: The Arcade Market Common Name: Kassie Keith Shop
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Georgetown
Built By: Year Built: 1902

Significance

Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct historic character of the Georgetown neighborhood. This is an altered but relatively intact historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance.

(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The original owner/builder of this building has not been identified. It is known to have historically operated as a "grocery and market" and appears to be among the oldest extant of the numerous small groceries established along this main arterial street.

Appearance
This historic property has undergone extensive renovation work since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project. The facade has been repaired and renovated. New (and some historic) windows have been installed and/or uncovered. The recessed entry at the center of the storefront has been eliminated and new entry doords installed. The building has been in active commercial use.

(1997) A generally intact however deteriorated example of a one-part, wood frame, falsefront commercial storefront design. Exhibits a nearly symmetrical commercial storefront with recessed entryway, intact original large display and transom windows, a pedimented falsefront panel and bulkhead. The form of the building is a basic gable front commercial vernacular building type.. Original display windows at the side elevation have been covered, however some 4/4 double hung wooden sash remain in place on the minor elevations. Original cladding (double bevel clapboard), corner boards and coping remain in place. The bulkhead appears to have been slightly altered. This building exhibits serious structural problems including a bulging area along the storefront elevation.
