|
This apartment house is part of the 1902 Columbia Terrace development owned by C. T. Smith and A. S. Kerry (Kerry Lumber Company) and designed by architects Robertson & Blackwell. Bounded by 14th and 15th Avenues between Columbia and Marion Streets, Columbia Terrace is an eclectic and somewhat eccentric group of "romanitc" houses, this one being the only apartment building. Originally this building also had one small storefront on Columbia Street. This building retains enough character defining characteristics to be of architectural interest and to contribute to the historic streetscape.

Appearance |
This massive, three story 36' x 61' building originally had 10 apartments and one store. It is basically a rectangular mass housed under a variety of rooflines primarily gable on hip with hipped dormers and a coner tower. The full width front porch is inset under the broad sweep of the roof. It is supported by classical columns set on square pillars. Original spindlework has been replaced by horizontal boards and original shingle siding has been covered with clapboard. The house is an eclectic mix of forms and details defying any stylistic label. It does, however, by it's castle-like mass remind us of the popularity of romatic, story book architecture in the early 20th century. |
