Significance |
|
A permit (#334412) was issued for construction of this residence in September 1939 and the work was completed in late February 1940. The original owner is listed as O. Heggin, who appears to have built the structure himself to a design provided by architect Fred Rogers.
Floyd O. Carter appears to have purchased the property at about the time construction was completed.
Leslie Higgenbottom acquired the property in 1956 and some electrical work was completed at the structure for owner Leo Higgenbottom in 1965. The property appears to have remained in the Higgenbottom family since that time. The current owner, Daniel Higgenbottom has owned the property since at least 2003 when it was acquired from the estate of Mary Higgenbottom.
This structure is significant as one of a group of houses of similar size and style built in the late 1930s and covering the entire block on which this house is situated. It is also an intact example of the small and efficient minimal traditional style infill housing popular in the last year of the Depression

Appearance |
This house is a one-story wood and masonry clad frame residence over a full basement on a poured concrete foundation. The basement appears to house a family room and a one-car garage. The low slope hipped roof, minimal enclosed soffits, wide bevel siding and divided windows identify the house as a pre-World War II minimal traditional design. The corner windows, the horizontal bias in the masonry detailing, the simple casings of the windows and the slight inlet at the front door give the structure an almost art deco feel. Some interior rooms feature knotty pine ceilings. A few windows have been replaced with units that do not feature true divided lights. No other significant modifications are apparent. |
