Significance |
|
Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, portions of its historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood. This is a fairly altered and deteriorated historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance. This property exhibits no substantive changes to the exterior appearance since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project. A folk art rock sculpture created by Georgetown resident Louis (Louie) Moss which includes extensive rock, petrified wood and stone design elements has been added to the east side (in front of main elevation) of the building. It has been the subject of some controversy within the Georgetown community [See Seattle PI, "No Parking Anytime: Wall at old Georgetown Station no Picasso but neighbors like it" Januray 25, 2008 and "Georgetown Artists Angry with SBC?" slog.thestranger.com (July 21, 2008)]. Mr. Moss also created a similar sculptural facade and entry elements for his own home at 6920 Flora Ave. S.
(1997) This property is associated with an era of residential and commercial building between 1916 and 1942 which continued in Georgetown despite an acceleration of the trends toward the industrialization of the area. Significant changes came with prohibition and the closure of the brewery in 1916, the completion of the Duwamish Waterway in 1917, and the arrival of new businesses, such as the Boeing Airplane Company in 1916. In spite of the increasingly industrial nature of the area which had been zoned as such in 1923, residents of Georgetown continued to build new homes and businesses and to plan for a future in the neighborhood. This was originally the location of a small grocery store operated by Chris Perovich who resided nearby. This property may pre-date the construction date identified on assessor’s records and may be worthy of additional research to determine a more accurate date of construction and original ownership.

Appearance |
A generally intact example of a residential scale, one-story, wood frame, falsefront commercial storefront design. Exhibits a symmetrical commercial storefront with large display windows, falsefront panel and bulkhead. The form of the building is a basic gable front residential vernacular house type.. Original residential windows (standard double hung type) and cladding (narrow clapboard) remain intact. Plywood has been applied over the original falsefront cladding. The bulkhead includes spindlework detail. A large hood vent is currently situated on the roof, and a deck area has been added at the front of the structure. The property may have served as both a residence and a commercial store or café. |
