Historic Name: German Home Common Name: German Home
Style: Tudor Neighborhood: Capitol Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1894

Significance
This building illustrates the changes in Capitol Hill over the past century. The house itself, reportedly built in 1894, is one of the oldest mansions on Renton Hill, or Second Hill. Captain William Renton platted the top of the hill in the 1880s, clearing the land, grading the streets and setting out wooden sidewalks. Development began to flourish with the opening of the Madison Street cable car line about 1890. The spectacular views both east and west attracted many mansions and luxury apartments as well as more modest houses. By the 1930s, many of the large homes became institutions, just as happened to the west on First Hill. This became the German Old People Home of the State of Washington in 1937. A two-story brick addition was constructed in 1952, but it does not ffect the integrity of the main building.

Appearance
This stucco-clad Foursquare has a round turret at the front corner, next to brick veranda which wraps around the corner. Above the shed roof of the porch is an oval window and a pari of one-over-one windows. The turret has leaded glass windows at the upper level.
