Significance

Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood.

This is an altered but relatively intact historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance. This property exhibits some substantive changes to the exterior appearance since it was identified in the 1997 HRI project; all of the original window sash members have been replaced by a vinyl window product.

(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The original owner/builder of this residence has not been identified. The residence is known to have been owned by Jennie (and William) Haege by c. 1937. It is assumed that they resided here. Mr. Haege was a driver.

Appearance

(2014) No substantive changes since identified in the 1997 HRI.

An intact however deteriorated example of the gable-front vernacular house type. This was a common domestic plan type that was popularly constructed throughout the American West during the later half of the 19th C and the early decades of the 20th C. The gable-front facade exhibits distinctive design features and historic building fabric indicative of popular architecture during the late 19th C: a prominent one & ½ story building form accentuated by a medium pitch roof, a projecting front porch and original tall, narrow double-hung windows. The house is currently clad with asbestos shakes applied over the original rustic siding. The form of the house is more complex than typical 19th c. front gable houses and is distinguished by a wall dormer, square side bay window, boxed gable end returns, and wide gable and eave trim. The footprint of the main gable portion of the house is 22’ x 30’ and an historic one story addition with porch is situated at the rear elevation. An original ornate front entry door appears to remain in place. Exterior alterations of note include the apparent removal of a shingle ornament from the upper front gable and construction of a concrete front porch deck, however the central brick chimney remains in place.
