Summary for 1422 27TH AVE / Parcel ID 1189000170 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Prairie Style, Queen Anne - Cottage Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1905

Significance

This is a slightly unusual application of Prairie and Queen Anne design elements to a bungalow scheme, resulting in a modest house that has manage to retain a high degree of integrity.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, Will Ropta and his wife apparently owned the house from about 1934 until at least 1937. It appears the structure was acquired by A. W. Sandstrom in 1958. It has been owned by Glenn Thompson since 1998, when it was purchased from DCBL Inc. following a foreclosure.

Appearance

This is a one story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence originally built on a post and beam foundation.

The low slope hipped roof, the overhanging eaves with enclosed soffits, the relatively massive square pier at the outside corner of the recessed porch, the organization of the siding into horizontal bands, and the horizontal emphasis in the detailing of the trim are all characteristic of the Prairie style.

The central unit of the Chicago style window in the square bay at the front of the house utilizes a glazing pattern most often associated with the Queen Anne style, consisting of a shallow rectangular sash divided into a regular pattern of triangular and diamond shaped lights over a much larger undivided sash, The use of contrasting materials in the composition of the elevations (particularly the flared band of shingles at the top of the front facing bay) and the use of double -hung windows with undivided sashes of equal size, are additional stylistic preferences associated with Queen Anne design. However, the massing of the house suggests a bungalow scheme rather than a Queen Anne cottage.

There appears to be an addition at the rear of the house; however, this may in fact be an original porch that was enclosed soon after the house itself was erected.

The house was built in 1905 (King County Property Record Card; King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed July 29, 2008).
