This is a small, “cottage” scale example of the Stick style, although both the structure’s design and its material integrity have been compromised by alteration as noted above.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history and record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, Aaron Maslau and his wife owned the house by 1940. It was acquired by Andrew J. Hopkins in 1968. Eric Steven Rockey appears to have purchased it from Yvonne Elisabeth Chotzen and William Jenner in 1995, and it has been owned by Risa Blythe since 2007.

This is a two story, shingle and clapboard clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a half basement.
The pent enclosed porch entry gable (cantilevered beyond the line of the flared piers, since replaced, that supported the shed roof of the porch in the original design), the enclosed soffits, the front facing window bays (each featuring a central window with a shallow rectangular pane over a much larger undivided pane), are elements of this structure that are customarily associated with Queen Anne design. However, the lack of any spindle work or lace-like bracketing at the porches and gables, a common feature of Queen Anne cottages, and the overall composition of this structure, which is simpler and tamer than that of the typical Queen Anne house, suggest the somewhat earlier Stick style. The moderately steep pitch of the asymmetrically placed, front facing gable and south facing cross gables, and the use of a limited variety of cladding material with a pattern of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal boards (including corner boards and coordinated window casings) are also elements of the Stick style.
The house was built in 1902 (King County Property Record Card; the King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed July 29, 2008). According to the King County Property Record Card, the house was remodeled in 1921.
The Assessor noted that a 6’ x 10’ area was added to the second floor between 1952 and 1956. Several of the original windows were removed, and the exterior cladding replaced or covered by 1961. The canted and flared porch supports that characterized the original design were replaced with simpler built up piers, the porch rail was modified, and a pair of slender square piers were added to support the formerly cantilevered entry pediment, after that date. Several of the second story wood windows have been replaced with aluminum in recent years, and the siding appears to have been renovated fairly recently as well.
