Significance |
|
The house is a typical Queen Anne design with Shingle style overtones that appears to have retained a fairly high degree of integrity.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history and record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the house appears to have been owned by Mike Murphy from about 1923 until at least 1937. The present owners acquired the house in 2006 from Kenneth J. and Shelby R. Smith, who appear to have purchased the property from Paul D. Briehl in 2003. Brielhl bought the house from Mark A. and Denise C. Briehl in 2000, who acquired it from Robert E Bundridge in 1996. Bundridge received the house in an estate settlement in 1994.

Appearance |
This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a brick foundation over a full basement with concrete floor. Front facing, shingle clad gables (one of them “clipped’) with flared pents intersecting an overhanging gambrel side gable roof, the enclosed soffits, and siding clad porch piers all suggest an eclectic approach to Queen Anne design incorporating characteristics often associated with the related Shingle style.
The house was built in 1906 (King County Property Record Card; King County GIS Center Property Report). The detailing of the trim at the front bay window has been modified and the original round window in the porch gable has been replaced with a square window.
