Summary for 1511 38TH AVE / Parcel ID / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne, Queen Anne - Free Classic Neighborhood:
Built By: Year Built: 1905

Significance
Although this initially appears to be a simple example of the Queen Anne style, its design integrity has been compromised by alteration to the porch, the organization of the windows in the front facing gable, and replacement of the original cladding. The structure featured several Queen Anne “free classic” details when surveyed in 1937.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses built in 1906 or before that survives in the core residential neighborhoods of the city, including the Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill.

A complete permit history and record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the house appears to have been owed by A. O. Harris from 1934 until at least 1937, by Macauly W. Taylor after 1966, and by Norman Walton since 1970.

Appearance
This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard clad, wood frame single-family residence on a wood post and concrete block foundation; there is no basement.

The steeply sloped roof with front facing gable and intersecting cross gables, the enclosed soffits, the turned posts at the porch, and the tall double hung windows with sash of equal size are all elements customarily associated with Queen Anne design.

The original full width front porch at the east elevation, featuring Tuscan columns and surmounted by a second floor deck and balustrade, would have exemplified the “free classic” variant of Queen Anne work had it survived; however, this element was replaced between 1937 and 1957 with a much smaller hip roofed porch featuring turned posts. The new porch was situated at the north end of the east elevation. A band of three double hung windows is now centered in the front gable where a door to the deck and a tall window were originally arrayed a few feet either side of the central axis. The original shingle and clapboard siding with decorative banding was replaced between 1937 and 1957 with cement/asbestos shingle siding.

The house was built in 1905 (King County Property Record Card; the King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed March 6, 2008).
