Summary for 1501 38TH AVE / Parcel ID / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Cottage, Queen Anne - Shingle Neighborhood:
Built By: Year Built: 1902

Significance
This is a small-scale example of the Shingle style, a variant of the Queen Anne style, exhibiting a high degree of integrity.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses built in 1906 or before that survives in the core residential neighborhoods of the city, including the Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill.

A complete permit history and record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the house was owned by Margaret Stark from 1912 until at least 1937, was acquired by Robert James Fletcher in 1963, by Michael Weaver Jr. in 1966, by Susan Thomas (from Henry Corl Boyar and Dawn Corl [Boya
r?]) in 1988, and has been owned by Joseph C. and Barbara S. Gaspers since 2002. The property was being offered for sale when surveyed in 2007.

Appearance
This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a full basement.

The steeply sloped roof, cantilevered side gables, the enclosed soffits, and the integral (recessed) porch are all elements customarily associated with Queen Anne design, as are the simple door and window surrounds and the delicately detailed entry door with large window. The continuous wood shingle cladding at the second story, and at front facing dormer, the shingles clad walls curving into recessed windows, the dormer’s hipped roof, the simple slender supporting element at the porch, and the double-hung windows with equal sized sashes, some featuring a regular pattern of slender hexagonal and small triangular panes in the upper sash and a single pane in the lower sash, are all elements associated with the Shingle style variant of Queen Anne work.

The house was built in 1902 (King County Property Record Card; King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed March 6, 2008). A small one-story extension was added to the back of the house before 1937.
