Summary for 1417 15TH AVE / Parcel ID 1728800046 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Cottage Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1887

Significance
Despite substantial alterations, this early Queen Anne Cottage style house retains its original form and exhibits a fair degree of integrity for a wood structure of its age. It may be one of the oldest wood buildings in the City of Seattle.

It is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattleā€™s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, J. E. Carton apparently owned the house from about 1931 until at least 1937. It appears the structure was acquired by Lula Mae Kirk in 1953, by Barto & Company in February 1961, and by J. Stroudamire in March 1961. Susan B. Moores bought the house from Steven & Terese Johnson in 1990, then sold it to the current owners, Christine Malecka and Bryan Prazen, in 2005.

Appearance
The house was built in 1887 (per King County Property Record Card; the King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed July 22, 2008, gives year built as 1900).

The siding has been covered and then exposed and altered a least once since 1937. The shingle siding that originally characterized the front facing gable is no longer extant. Some of the window openings have been filled. At several of the remaining openings, the original 2/2 double hung units have been replaced with units featuring false divided lights giving them the appearance of a 9/9 double hung window. Decorative shutters have been added.

The house is strikingly similar to its neighbor at 1407 15th Avenue, although the latter structure has suffered less from alterations.
