Summary for 737 33RD AVE / Parcel ID 2110200075 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman, Queen Anne - Cottage Neighborhood: Madrona
Built By: Year Built: 1905

Significance
This is an example of the transition from Queen Anne work to the Craftsman style in the first decade of the 20th century, although it should be noted that the structure’s design integrity has been somewhat compromised by substantial alterations to, and a later attempt at restoration of, the entry porch.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, C. G. Moberg apparently owned the house from about 1933 until at least 1937. It appears the structure was acquired by Arthur Kahn in 1941 and then by G. C. Gibson in 1960. Matthew and Elizabeth Smith appear to have purchased the house from Alan and Gloria Sponberg in 1992. The current owners, Christopher and Susan Martin, acquired the property in 2002.

Appearance
This house was built in 1905 (King County Property Record Card; King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed July 22, 2008). A photo attached to the King County Property Record Card suggests that the original front porch of the house was removed in the early 1960s and replaced with a much smaller, asymmetrically placed porch. The smaller porch has since been removed, and a larger porch similar to (but not identical with) the original structure has been added.
