This large nine story apartment building was constructed in circa 1910 as a residential hotel. It is a relatively intact and good example of a Beaux Arts style residential hotel building of the early 20th Century. It is located in an area that was historically Seattle's Japantown commercial district and is part of the International Special Review District. It is located outside of the Chinatown National Register Historic District, where similar residential hotels can be found. The Chinatown National Register District includes twenty-six historic hotels known as single room occupancy workers’ hotels. These were built to house the many Asian men that came to work in the lumber, mining, railroad and other industries. The extant hotel buildings make up the largest category of historic building types in the NR district. (Kreisman, 1986).
