This is a fairly good example of American Foursquare architecture with Queen Anne – Free Classic detailing, although the structure’s design integrity has been somewhat compromised by alteration to the front porch and the replacement of several windows.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, Bernice Tomezuk apparently owned the house from about 1927 until at least 1937. It appears the structure was acquired from Thomas R. and Joanne Kelly by Susan B. Slocum and Eric R. Jensen in 1998. The current owner acquired the property in 2002.

| Appearance |
This is a two story, clapboard clad, wood frame duplex on a concrete foundation, over a full basement. The porch appears to be built on a post and beam foundation. The generally rectilinear but somewhat irregular plan features a hip roof with enclosed soffits at the eaves.
A partial width, single story, front porch extends from a notch at the north end of the east elevation. It has been altered by removal of the balustrade that once crowned its hipped roof, by the loss of some of the Tuscan columns that once supported the roof, and by rearrangement of some of the remaining columns. The single story back porch wraps around the northwest corner of the structure.
The house is characterized by one-over-one double hung windows arrange single across the facades, although both levels of the double height bay at the south elevation, as well as the large window group lighting the main front room at the east elevation, are characterized by a single, cottage type double-hung window flanked by two one-over-one units. A more modern window assembly has replaced the front room group and some of the other windows appear to have been replaced in kind. A second front door appears to have been added at the front porch.
The original, distinctively shaped, tall central chimney has been reduced in height and altered in appearance.
A hip roofed dormer, featuring battered extensions of its front facing wall, is located on axis above the east elevation.
This house was built in 1901 (King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed July 22, 2008). It is not know when the building was altered from single family to duplex use
The structure is one of several detached single family type buildings placed squarely on rectangular lots on the west facing slope along the east side of the valley separating First Hill from the Central Area. A rectangular street grid characterizes this part of the city.
