Summary for 1106 13TH AVE / Parcel ID 2254501185 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: First Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1900

Significance
This is a good example of Queen Anne residential work, although the structure’s design integrity has been slightly compromised by in-kind replacement of some of the windows.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, A. G. Howat apparently owned the house from about 1921 until at least 1937. It appears the structure was acquired by S. E. Mickey in 1963. Melynda Warner received the house from William Warner in 2001 and sold it to the current owners, Ron S. Logghe and Ariel Ehrlich, later that same year.

Appearance
This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard, shingle, and vertical board clad, wood frame single-family residence on a part concrete; part post and beam foundation, over a partial basement. A steeply pitched hipped roof with lower cross gables, a defining feature of the Queen Anne style, caps the essentially rectangular plan. The roof is flared at the eaves and the flat soffits are enclosed. A wide frieze board forms a visual base for the overhanging eaves.

The front porch projects toward the street from the northern half of the west elevation. It features a hipped roof supported by two built-up square columns. Although these support elements do not appear to be new, they replace the original, stout, turned posts that supported the porch roof in 1937. A cut-away bay (another typical Queen Anne design element) sits below the projecting portion of the second floor that, with its cross gable, extends into the side yard from the middle of the south elevation.

Tall, one-over-one, double-hung windows occur in pairs and groups of three on all three visible elevations. Three cottage type windows that were once grouped together to light the front room at the main level (each featuring a smaller sash with numerous, small, diamond shaped panes over a larger sash with an undivided piece of glass) have been replaced. The present window assembly consists of simpler double-hung side units and a central window that only mimics the original design. A modern, unglazed panel door has replaced the half glazed stile and rail door that opened to the porch in 1937.

The original tall, slender brick chimney appears to have been removed and replaced at a different location by a shorter stack.

This house was built in 1900 (King County Property Record Card; King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed July 22, 2008). The structure is one of several detached single family houses placed squarely on rectangular lots in a portion of the city characterized by a rectangular street grid. The house is situated near the eastern edge of the valley separating First Hill from the Central Area.
