This is an example of a transitional style of architecture, exhibiting a Queen Anne roof on a bungalow type scheme with Craftsman cladding and windows. The structure exhibits a high degree of integrity despite changes to the entry stair.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property, however, the house appears to have been owned by Thomas J. Bennett when the property was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937.

This is a one story, shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a full basement.
The rectangular plan is capped by a relatively steep gable roof with minimal overhangs, enclosed soffits, and narrow barge boards, all typical features of the Queen Anne style. The basic shape of the structure is reminiscent of the Cape Cod house, although this building has none of the "colonial" detailing typically associated with that style. Instead, the windows, doors and cladding are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Craftsman bungalow design. The front porch projects from the street facade and is placed slightly off center. Its gable roofed is supported by two pairs of slender wood posts more typical of mid 20th century minimal traditional design than either Queen Anne work or the Craftsman style.
This house was built in 1900 according to King County GIS Center Property Report (accessed July 12, 2008), however, according to the King County Property Record Card, it was erected in 1902. The foundation was "replastered" in 1935 according to the Property Record Card. |
