This is a very interesting, and prominently sited, example of Queen Anne and Shingle style architecture, although the structure’s design integrity has been somewhat compromised by changes to the entry porch, alterations to the windows, the enclosure of the tower's upper level, and modifications to the trim and cladding system.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the house appears to have been owned by S. J. Whitslock when the property was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937.

This is a two story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete (or concrete block) foundation scored and textured to resemble rusticated stone block. The house is built over a half basement.
The essentially rectangular plan is capped by a gable roof with moderate to extensive overhangs and enclosed soffits.
The windows and doors were originally characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with the Queen Anne style. The agitated massing and the variety of cladding materials, as well as the use of a corner tower, are all typical elements of Queen Anne design. However, the paired gables at the south facing cross gable, the half circle cutaways at the protruding upper gables on both the west and the south elevations, the inset and partially enclosed entry porch, the extensive use of shingles at upper level wall surfaces and at prominent trim features (such as the west facing shingle-clad barge boards) and the use of curved, shingle-clad surfaces at the walls flanking the inset upper story windows are all characteristic features of the Shingle style.
This house was built in 1906. Since then, the entry porch has been altered. The octagonal tower was originally open on several sides, and where the tower did not share a wall with the main structure of the house, the roof was supported by shingle-clad wall panels with rounded ends or round, shingle-clad columns. The tower has since been fully enclosed, although windows have been centered in some of the wall facets. The garage appears to be new or significantly altered. Metal fencing now encloses most of the site.
Most of the original windows appear to have been replaced, and in several cases, the sizes of the window openings have been altered. Much of the original Queen Anne style window "sticking" has been lost. Some of the new windows are divided in a style more typical of late 20th Century work.
Undulating, decorative wood railings have been removed from the false upper level decks at the west and south elevations. The original clapboard siding at the main body of the house was covered or replaced by a different cladding material in the early 1960s but has since been returned to something close to its original appearance. The wood trim at most of the windows has been altered, and the wood banding that originally coordinated the trim at most of the openings -- and separated the clapboard cladding from the shingle siding -- has also been modified. Metal railings have been added at the entry porch.
