This is a good example of a Queen Anne cottage that originally featured some limited Free Classic detailing. Despite modifications at the entry porch and the replacement of the original roofing, this structure exhibits a high degree of integrity
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the house appears to have been owned by Theodore W. Jue in 1938. It may have previously been owned by Nellie Riley, who appears to have owned the small house in back from about 1915 until at least 1937. Samuel H. and Alicia D. Buyco apparently acquired the house prior to 2001 and then transferred it to the current owner in 2004.

This is a one story, clapboard, shingle and vertical board siding clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a half basement.
The rectangular plan is capped by a hip roof with cross gables featuring relatively wide overhangs and enclosed soffits.
The hip roof with intersecting, pent enclosed cross gables is a defining feature of the Queen Anne style. Decorative shingles, typical of late Victorian era design, adorn the gables.The facade complexities added by the projecting, hip roofed entry porch and the window bays at each of the cross gables are typical elements of Queen Anne work. The windows and doors are also characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne design. The half glazed entry door, and the "single house" muntin pattern in the central cottage window of the front-facing bay are particularly emblematic of that style.
This house was built in 1904 according to the King County GIS Center Property Report (accessed August 18, 2008) and the King County Property Record Card. (This residence is nearly identical in design to a number of other houses on the street including the structure at 1639 S. King Street, built about the same time.)
Although replacement of the composition roofing (which clad the roof in 1937) with metal standing seam roofing has slightly altered the character of the structure, the Queen Anne configuration of the roof remains unchanged. Modifications to the front porch include replacement of the original Tuscan columns with simple wood posts. replacement of the entry stairs, and the addition of simple wood baluster railings at the stairs and porch deck.
A separate database entry for this property was prepared by another surveyor.
A second dwelling is located in a small cottage (608 sq. ft.) on the same site just behind (i.e., just south of) the house described above. This second dwelling is addressed as 1643-1/2 S. King Street. It was built in 1918 according to the King County Property Record Card, although this same source indicates that it was owned by Nellie Riley from about 1915 until at least 1937. This structure is difficult to view from the public right-of-way; however, photographs made by the Assessor in 1937 show a simple gable roofed structure with Craftsman style detailing. Because this structure cannot easily be observed, and because it was built after 1906, it was not surveyed.
