Summary for 128 30TH AVE / Parcel ID 3416600765 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: American Foursquare - Prairie, Queen Anne - Shingle Neighborhood: Leschi
Built By: Year Built: 1904

Significance
This is a transitional American Foursquare design incorporating Queen Anne - Shingle style elements and emerging Prairie style components. The structure’s design integrity has been somewhat compromised by modifications at the back and some interior alterations.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the house appears to have been owned by F. G. Selvidge and spouse in 1941. An anecdotal account suggests that the house once belonged to "the Yesler sisters;" however, no specific evidence has been discovered that confirms this account.

Appearance
This is a two story, shingle, clapboard and drop siding clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a full basement.

The essentially rectangular plan is capped by a hip roof with extensive overhangs featuring enclosed soffits and widely spaced modillions.

The wide bay at the south end of the west (front) elevation is capped by a roof evocative of the signature Queen Anne corner tower. The windows and doors are also characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with the Queen Anne style, although the nearly ubiquitous shingle siding and the
large, two-sided oriel window projecting from the north side elevation are more suggestive of Shingle style sensibilities. A rectangular bay at the back end of the south elevation may be an early addition as it was in place by 1937. The classically detailed dormer and deep built-up frieze at the base of the main roof are Free Classic - Queen Anne elements, The wide overhangs, together with the single-story projecting entry porch that features a pent enclosed, front facing, low slope gable supported by shingle-clad battered piers bearing on a solid, low porch railing, are suggestive of the emerging Prairie style.

This house, located at the boundary between the Leschi and Central Area neighborhoods, was built in 1904. According to the current owner, there have been some relatively recent modifications at the back of the house, and portions of the interior have been altered. A few window openings have been modified at the rear elevation, and wood storm windows have been added at several openings elsewhere. The decorative brick work of the original Queen Anne style chimney has been simplified.
