This is a somewhat unusual example of Queen Anne design that appears to anticipate foursquare architecture. The structure’s design integrity has been somewhat compromised by alterations and changes of use over the years since its construction, but the house retains much of its distinctive character.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the structure appears to have been owned by Investors Syndicate from about 1935 until at least 1937. Herman Kemp purchased the property in 1955. Pearl Kemp sold the structure to Berhe Desta and Lemlem Tesfagabir in 1993. Abdulaziz Al-Othimin and Barbara Walker bought the house is 1994, then sold it to Jesse Louis Doquilo and Laura M. Zeck in 2003. The current owners bought the house in 2007.

This is a two-and-a-half story, clapboard clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a full basement. The porch appears to be built on a post and beam foundation which includes stone piers (or concrete surfaced to resemble stone) at the bases of the porch columns.
The essentially rectangular plan is capped by a hip roof with hip roof dormers, moderate overhangs, and enclosed soffits. The roof of the wrap-around porch is also hipped but features a flat roof portion where the balcony is situated and a west facing pented gable.
The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne architecture. The relatively complex hip roof and wrap-around porch are typical Queen Anne elements. The modillions at the soffits, the Tuscan columns at the porch and the associated built-up wood entablature, and the built up frieze at the base of the overhangs all suggest Queen Anne - Free Classic design sensibilities.
This structure was built in 1904. The building was being used as a duplex when it was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937; however, the structure appears to have been converted to a "rest home" between 1951 and 1953. Portions of the wrap-around porch appear to have been enclosed when this modification was undertaken. The King County Property Record Card suggests that the building was sprinklered in 1970, indicating that it was probably still in use as a rest home at that time. Although the date of re-conversion is not known, the structure has more recently functioned as a single family residence.
The porch and balcony railings have been rebuilt more than once. The free classic dentil strips that were originally associated with the entablature and frieze have been removed. The balcony appears to have been abandoned for a time in the 1950s,1960s and 1970s (a change suggested by the absence of balcony railings in a photograph made in 1955) but is now again in use. The tall chimney has been modified but not shortened.
