Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Free Classic, Queen Anne - Shingle Neighborhood: Madrona
Built By: Year Built: 1892

Significance
This is a fairly typical example of Queen Anne architecture with both Free - Classic and Shingle style elements. The structure’s design integrity has been slightly compromised by alterations to the cladding and to the porch.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property;
however, the house appears to have been owned by Abbie A. Preston when the property was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937. The current owners, Thomas Ditty & Kimberly Herber, bought the house in 1995. James Craft Homes, Inc. purchased the property from Mary Lou Moore in 1994.

Appearance
This is a two story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a brick and concrete foundation, over a full basement.

The plan is irregular. The the rectangular footprint of the main mass of the house is capped by a gambrel roof with minimal overhangs and enclosed soffits. The asymmetrically placed entry porch has a flat roof with eaves of moderate depth. A large enclosed porch at the back of the house could not be observed from the street but is illustrated in the King County Property Record Card.

The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne design, and the asymmetrical placement of the entry porch, the large front-facing hip roofed dormer, the enclosed back porch, and the small bay at the south elevation is also typical of that style. The slender Tuscan piers, organized in groups of three at the entry porch, and the associated entablature, which continues around the house at the base of the upper level as a frieze, are Queen Anne - Free Classic elements. The large, uninterrupted shingle surfaces at the ends of the gambrel roof are characteristic of Shingle style work. The 9/1 double-hung windows used with the gambrel roof prefigure the emergence of the Colonial Revival style in the early 20th century as late Queen Anne houses of this type were made more symmetrical and built utilizing the four square plan with central hall typical of Colonial Revival designs.

The asphalt/composition roof shingle were manufactured to result in an interesting fish scale design.

This house was built in 1892 according to the King County Property Record Card (1906 according to
the King County GIS Center Property Report accessed August 18, 2008). The King County Property Record Card indcates that the structure was remodeled in 1920.

The dormer at the front of the house appears slightly altered. The shingles that once clad the first level below the windows appear to have been replaced with clapboard siding. The entry stairs have been altered, and two additional piers have been added at the entry porch to form the two groups of three piers at the outside corners.
