This is a simple example of Queen Anne architecture with some early 20th century design elements. The structure's design integrity has been somewhat compromised by alterations to the porch and the addition or modification of several windows.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle's Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, Ellen G. Griffith apparently owned the house from about 1920 until at least 1937. The current owner acquired the property in 1983.

This is a one story, drop siding clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a half basement. The rectangular plan is capped by a hip roof with moderate overhangs and enclosed soffits.
The tall, slender, individually placed double-hung windows are typical of Queen Anne architecture, as is the moderately sloped hipped main roof, including the intersecting, front-facing, pented gable over the porch. The simple wood entablature that extends around the house as a frieze must be viewed as a Queen Anne -- Free Classic element when seen in the context of the symmetrical front elevation. The original tapered posts and the original baluster railing at the from porch would have reinforced this perception had they survived; however, the heavier but simpler wood piers that now support the porch roof give the house more of a Craftsman flavor, especially when combined with the bungaloid form of the structure
This house was built in 1904 according to the King County Property Record Card (1906 according to the King County GIS Center Property Report accessed August 8, 2008). The house was apparently remodeled in 1986.
The inset back porch, at the northwest corner of the house, appears to have been enclosed.
A large cottage window originally located at the front elevation has been replaced by a picture window of approximately the same size. A small, modern, hip roofed bay window has been added near the back end of the west elevation. New basement windows have been installed. A wood apron has been added at the base of at least one window sill.
The original masonry chimney has been removed and replaced with a modern stovepipe. The tapered, square posts that originally supported the pented gable roof over the front porch have been replaced with larger solid wood piers, and the associated porch baluster railing has been replaced by a wood and fabric railing built in a more modern style. T1-11 siding appears to have replaced vertical board siding at the base of the porch. The roof soffits appear to have been replaced at the overhangs and soffits vents have been added.
This house is situated in the portion of the Central Area that extends north of Madison between 23rd Avenue East and Washington Park Arboretum (as the boundaries of the neighborhood are delineated by Folke Nyberg and Victor Steinbrueck in "Central Area: An Inventory of Buildings and Urban Design Resources," Seattle: Historic Seattle Preservation and Development Authority, 1975). However, this part of the Central Area is also sometimes called East Capitol Hill, Miller Park or Madison-Miller.
