Summary for 2822 E HARRISON ST E / Parcel ID 5016000540 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1900

Significance
This is a fairly typical example of small scale Queen Anne architecture, although the structure’s design integrity has been somewhat compromised by alterations to the windows and the front porch.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the Home Owner's Loan Corporation appears to have owned the property when it was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937 until at least the following year.

Appearance
This is a one-and-a-half story, almost entirely clapboard clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a three-quarter basement. The front porch appears to be built on a post and beam foundation.

The rectangular plan is capped by a gable roof with moderate overhangs and enclosed soffits. The front porch and window bays are hip-roofed, and an early addition at the rear may be hip-roofed as well.

The house was built in 1900 according to the King County Property Record Card (1901 according to
the King County GIS Center Property Report accessed August 18, 2008)). The Property Record Card indicates that the house was remodeled in 1925, though the extant of the changes made at that time are not indicated.

The built up wood piers and the supporting solid, clapboard clad railing that originally characterized the front porch have been replaced with slender wood posts and modern wood baluster type railing. The east elevation appears to have been modified with an addition. The detached garage may also have been altered. The original windows all appear to have been replaced with vinyl units and the window casings have been altered. At least one basement window appears to have been removed. The wide clapboard cladding at the basement level appears to have been replaced in kind.
