This is a fairly typical example of vernacular Queen Anne architecture. The structure’s design integrity has been slightly compromised by alterations to some of the windows and the addition of a deck.
This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.
This structure was surveyed for the City by Marilyn Sullivan in 1991. According to Sullivan, the house was built by Charles H. Harvey, an African American pioneer and "noted Seattle building contractor."
A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the house appears to have been owned by Charles Schaffer from about 1935 to at least 1937.

| Appearance |
This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a half basement. The porches appear to be built on post and beam foundations. The essentially rectangular plan is capped by a gable roof with moderate overhangs and enclosed soffits. A hip roof, supported by built up piers bearing an a solid shingle clad railing, extends over the single story entry porch.
The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with the Queen Anne style. Tall, double hung windows occur singly except at the cross gable; a wide cottage type window, with muntins organized in a "single house" pattern in the upper sash, opens onto the entry porch; and the front door is glazed.
This house was built in 1897 according to the King County Property Record Card (1901 according to the King County GIS Center Property Report; accessed August 18, 2008). In her database entry for this structure, Marilyn Sullivan (who surveyed the property in 1991) indicates the house was actually built in 1905.
According to the King County Property Record Card, the house was remodeled in 1909; however, the extent of the alterations made at that time are not known.
A deck with shingle clad solid rails was added at the southwest corner of the structure at some point between 1937 and 1991. When the property was surveyed in May 2008, the front porch was being rebuilt or altered. Several of the windows have been replaced and storm windows have been added at some of the original openings. The wood railing at the north side of the driveway has been extended down the concrete stairway in the front yard, and horizontal boards have been added to reduce the size of the openings in the railing.
