Summary for 1104 41ST AVE / Parcel ID 5317100031 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Shingle Neighborhood:
Built By: Year Built: 1891

Significance
This is a very interesting example of Shingle style architecture with eclectic borrowings (or additions) from Queen Anne -- Free Classic design, and from various strains of the Tudor and Colonial Revival styles popular in the 1920s and 1930s. The current configuration of the house was developed over a 48 year period (from 1891 to 1939). The structure’s design integrity has been slightly compromised by modification to the garage at the north end of the house and by the installation of decorative shutters.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, the house appears to have been owned by Helen Calhoun Douglas from 1934 until at least 1937. The current residents acquired the property from Robert L. and Joanne T. Sheppard, who owned the house from 1971 until the early 1980s (perhaps as late as 1986).

Appearance
This is a two -story, shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a partial basement. The irregular plan is capped by a gable roof with minimal overhangs and enclosed soffits (where they exist). The current shed and hip configuration of the roof in the front of the house between the gabled wings, and the flat roof at the entry, appear to be the result of extensive and eclectic alterations undertaken in 1939.

The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details associated with various modes of Queen Anne work, although the front facing bay located south of the main entry has a "modernistic" character and the older looking windows have muntin patterns suggesting a mixed stylistic heritage. The massive chimneys appear to be of Queen Anne derivation; the configuration of the main roof is more characteristic of Tudor revival work. The entry, and the associated porch, have a slight colonial revival flavor despite the paired columns.

The King County Property Record Card for this parcel seems to suggest that the house was continuously under construction, or constantly being remodeled and expanded, from 1891 to 1900.
The King County GIS Center Property Report indicates that the structure was built in 1901.

The Property Record Card indicates that
a boathouse (opening onto Lake Washington, behind the house) was added to the property under Permit #328919 (dated 9/7/38). The Property Record Card also indicates that the house itself was remodeled in 1939 under Permit #332283 (dated 5/19/39). The latter work included the addition of a full basement under at least a portion of the structure.

It is likely that one of the gabled wings and the single story element between the wings is the
result of extensive and eclectic alterations undertaken in 1939. The garage may not be original but was in place by 1940 (the Assessor did not prepare the Property Record Card until that year, and for the purposes of determining integrity, the period of significance must be stretched to that date). The garage doors have been replaced at least once since that time. The shutters do not appear to be original.
