This is a distinctive and well-preserved residence that exhibits modest Craftsman Bungalow stylistic influences; it is a good example of middle-class house types that were prevalently constructed by building contractors and housing developers during this era. It was constructed in 1916 and is located in the Sunset Heights Addition, which was initially platted by H.A. Onsum and O.E. Anrud (and their wives) in April 1889. According to Permit # 147440 (dated 2/29/1916), this house was constructed for C.A. Wall by the builder/carpenter Andrew Borg. It appears to have been built according to a standardized plan from a planbook source, although Mr. Borg is listed on the permit as the architect. The anticipated construction cost was $2,000.00. Mr. Borg is known to have lived nearby at 813 N 43rd St. and is believed to have built other houses in the neighborhood. Charles August Wall was a Swedish immigrant born c.1880 who immigrated to the US in 1893 and appears been residing in Washington State by 1907. He worked as a butcher/meat cutter (at nearby market at 4615 Phinney Ave. N.) at the time that this house was built for himself, his wife Ellen and their children. Mr. Wall appears to have completed the purchase of the land parcel 3-6-1916. Prior to moving here the family lived nearby at 4418 Dayton Avenue. Polk’s Seattle City Directory indicates that by 1919 Ellen Wall was a widow. No obituary for Mr. Wall has been uncovered. Mrs. Wall and members of the Wall family appear to have continued to own this house and reside here until c.1955.

| Located mid-block on the east side of Phinney Avenue N. with front elevation oriented to the west. Well-preserved, one story, wood-frame, single-family residence constructed in 1916. Exhibits distinctive Craftsman Bungalow style design elements/ features. Front gable-wing building form w/ prominent main gable and small habitable attic area. Measures approx. 26’ x 32’ with concrete foundation and basement level. Prominent projecting front gable 8’ x 18’ porch. Craftsman style design elements/features include: low pitched roof forms; brick masonry porch piers, cheeks and retaining wall; cedar shingles laid in double-layer pattern; multiple kneebraces; wide barge boards and roof overhangs. Projecting porch distinguished by sets of square porch posts with horizontal members resting on large brick piers; low guardrail members match historic image. Original wooden windows including multi-pane sidelights and upper sash members remain in place. Original multi-pane Craftsman style door remains in place. Original brick masonry fireplace at south elevation. |
