This is an unusual entirely brick-clad residence that exhibits modest Craftsman Bungalow stylistic influences; it is a good example of middle-class house types that were prevalently constructed by building contractors and housing developers during this era. It was constructed in 1925 and is located in the Denny & Hoyt’s Addition, one of the earliest platted and developed residential areas in Fremont. According to building permit records, this house was constructed for C.W. Streckenbach, possibly by the builder/contractor H.J. Miller. Streckenbach purchased this property – which included a small hipped roof 980 s.f. cottage (built c.1898) - on 11-6-25. In order to construct the subject house he obtained a building permit (dated 6-7-1925) to move the cottage to the rear of the site. During this period, Chester W. Streckenbach was a manager for the Washington Broom & Woodenware Co. located at 386 W. Nickerson. The new house may have taken a while to complete since the fireplace and chimney were not permitted or built until 1929. A brick veneer garage was also built on the site in 1929. Mr. Streckenbach appears to have resided in the subject house with his wife Mayme until c.1945.

Located mid-block on the west side of Whitman Avenue N. with the front elevation oriented to the east. Generally well-preserved, one story, brick veneer/wood-frame, single-family residence constructed in 1925. Exhibits modest late Craftsman Bungalow stylistic design elements/ features. Hipped roof form w/projecting hipped roof porch. Measures approx. 25’ x 35’ with concrete foundation and basement level. Prominent projecting front porch measures 5’ x 10’ is enclosed with brick arched opening and stairs w/brick cheeks. Craftsman style design elements/features include: low pitched roof forms; wire-cut variegated brick masonry cladding, and wide roof overhangs. Original wooden double –hung and fixed windows remain in place. Original brick masonry fireplace at south elevation. Garage designed in character w/ house located on site. |
