King County tax assessment rolls for 1900 indicate that this property was owned by Hattie R. Chestnut and that it had not been improved. The permit to construct this house was issued to Margaret Sanders (Fremont), who was listed as the owner, on April 8, 1903. The permit was for a “1-1/2 story cottage” with an estimated construction cost of $1,300.00. The King County tax assessment rolls for 1905 indicate that the property was owned by Margaret Sanders with improvements valued at $600. The house is clearly delineated on the Sanborn Insurance Map (1904-05) with a one-story stable to the rear of the lot. William and Margaret Sanders lived in Ballard prior to residing at this house. The 1900 U.S. Census enumerated Wm. and Margaret Sanders and three children; Wm. was born in England in 1866 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1882. He worked at that time as a teamster. William Sanders may have been related to Thomas Sanders: Thomas Sanders was the president of the Bryan Lumber & Shingle Mill Company (in Fremont) from 1892 until his death in 1914. [By 1924, his sons William A. Sanders, Howard W. sanders and Alan D. Sanders were officers in the company.] The Bryan Lumber & Shingle Mill Company was initially established in Bryan, Washington; it took over the business and the plant of the Fremont Milling Co. in 1895. Both Thomas and William sanders were born in England and William Sanders worked in the shingle mill trade; thus, he may have been related to Thomas Sanders, who had a son also named William. William and Margaret Sanders appear to have resided in the subject residence until c.1910 when the U.S. Census shows that William was working in Pearson, Washington (Kitsap County) as a shingle mill manager and Margaret and their five children were residing there. By 1920, William and Margaret were residing on a farm in Snohomish County (Centerville) and one of their sons was working at a local shingle mill, possibly affiliated with the Bryant Lumber & Shingle Mill Company. By 1910, the subject house was owned by Frank W. Abbott, who was a shipping clerk at the Albers Bros. Milling Co. Frank and Bessie Abbott appear to have resided here for several years; the property appears to have remained in the ownership of the Abbott family until 1941.

| Located NE corner of the intersection of Sixth Avenue NW and NW 43rd Street with façade oriented to the west. One and one-half story, wood-frame, single family residence. Residence measures approx. 24’x 38’ with a post and pier foundation and no basement level. Unusual front-gable roof form with prominent polygonal bay window above the projecting entry porch at the north side of the façade. The bay is capped by a steep polygonal roof; thus, the entry porch and bay dominate the façade. A two-story polygonal feature with a gable roof is also located at the south elevation; this was originally a one-story bay with a cut-away recessed porch at the second floor level. The open porch was infilled sometime before 1972. Original narrow horizontal cedar siding appears to remain in place. Unusual circular shingles are located in the peak of the main gable end. Original double-hung wooden windows appear to remain in place. Roof features include prominent gable end returns, wide gable-end molding treatments and pediments at the entry porch and side bay. Porch distinguished by slender wooden columns that may or may not be original. Site includes a garage that has been converted to an apartment unit. |
