This house is a notable and well-preserved example of Craftsman design. It was constructed in 1908-09 and is located in the Woodland Addition to Salmon Bay City, which was plated by Robert D. McFadden in February 1887 and was one of the earliest platted and developed residential areas in Fremont. On December 7, 1908, permit #69815 was issued to Frank Boyle to “build 1 ½ story frame residence 24 x 36” at this address at an anticipated cost of $1,500. Frank J. Boyle was a Canadian immigrant house carpenter and shipwright who in 1908 resided nearby at 915 N. 47th St. He subsequently resided at 4516 Dayton Avenue N. (c.1909) and 4318 Sunset Pl. (1910) and 4237 Phinney Ave. N (1920); these may also be residences that he constructed. The earliest home owner and resident may have been Matthew W. (Wayne) Twitchell, a clerk at Seattle Electric Company; however, addition tax roll research is needed in order to verify the early ownership history.

| Located mid-block with main elevation oriented to the north. Well-preserved, one and one-half story, wood-frame, single-family residence constructed in 1908. Exhibits distinctive Craftsman style design elements/features. Front gable building form w/ projecting hipped roof porch at west side of facade. Measures approx. 24’ x 36’ with concrete foundation and basement level. Prominent 10’ x 10’ cutaway and projecting porch with square columns, fancy kneebraces and solid wing wall supports. Gable dormer at east elevation. Polygonal bay windows within and below dormer. Square corner bay at east side of façade. Clad with narrow cedar siding with corner boards at first floor level and shingle siding at base and gable ends. Craftsman style design elements/features include: low-pitched roof forms; cedar shingle cladding; multiple kneebraces; wide barge boards and roof overhangs. Distinctive original wooden windows including diamond pattern upper sash cottage and accent windows at corner bay and multi-pane upper sash members at second floor level gable ends. Small side window openings at gable end have been infilled. Brick chimney has been replaced by metal flue. |
