Historic Name: Max P.H. Mielke House Common Name: Style: Colonial Neighborhood: Fremont Built By: Year Built: 1927   Significance This house is a well-preserved (and unusual for Fremont) example of a highbred Colonial Bungalow style residence that were popularly constructed during the late 1920s. On September 26, 1928, permit #280681 was issued to Max P.H. Mielke for the construction of a 32’ x 38 ft. “Brick veneer residence with garage in basement” at this address that was estimated to cost $4,000. No contractor or architect was identified on the permit record. King County property tax records indicate that Max P.H. Mielke acquired the building site shortly after the issuance of the permit (10-9-1928). The interior is believed to have been distinguished by tile work in the kitchen and bath as well as a tile fireplace surround and mahogany woodwork. Max P.H. Mielke was a car repair foreman for the Seattle Municipal Street Railway; he and/or other family members appear to have retained ownership of the house until at least the 1970s. King County property tax records indicate that the house was remodeled in1930 to add an enclosed porch.   Appearance Located at the NE corner of the intersection of N. 48th St. and Greenwood Ave. N. with the front elevation oriented to the south. Well-preserved, 1 ½ story, wood-frame and brick veneer, single-family residence constructed in 1928-29. Exhibits distinctive highbred Colonial Bungalow stylistic design elements/features. Symmetrical side-gable building form w/prominent central shed dormer and projecting front-gable porch. Measures approx. 32’ x 38’ with concrete foundation and basement level. Prominent 8’ x 12’ porch exhibits square wooden columns (replaced original slightly tapered columns), pedimented roof with gable-end returns and arched accent window, brick masonry wing walls and stair checks. Colonial Revival style design elements/features include: symmetrical side-gable form; prominent gable-end returns, classical-inspired porch features; brick masonry cladding siding; double-hung wooden windows with multi-pane windows sash; prominent brick chimney at gable end. Craftsman Bungalow style design elements/features include: low sloped roof form; stucco cladding at gable ends and dormer; distinctive original accent windows (including ornate upper sash and transom lite windows at south and west elevations); original arched oak door. Garage at basement level is accessible from Greenwood Avenue N. includes modern garage door.
